Drama is build about some kind of conflict.

Conflict generally occurs when a character cannot achieve an objective due to an obstacle. This obstacle may be internal or external – between characters or between characters and their environment. Conflict can be shown in a variety of ways, for example through physical, verbal or psychological means. Conflict can be embedded in the structure of the drama (Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, Drama Study Design, p.10)

In our Drama, the conflict is based in the characters themselves. They have to face the reality and accept it to be able to move on and leave the bad place they are in at the moment.

Examples of conflict:
  1. Person vs. Fate/God
  2. Person vs. Self
  3. Person vs. Person
  4. Person vs Society
  5. Person vs. Nature
  6. Person vs. Supernatural
  7. Person vs. Technology

Binary Oppositions - Levi-Strauss
All narratives are driven foward by conflict that is caused by a series of opposing forces:
good/evil     powerty/weath     youth/ age     light/dark     sanity/madness     peace/war

1. Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare

Two lovers cannot be together due to their family conflict. The hate between two families pushes main characters to drastic methds to stay together, eding tradicly - they both die.

It is an example of exteranal conflict- where characters face the obsticles from other characters.

2. Titanic (1997)

Two character presented in real life events, showing the huge catartrophy of a ship singing in 1912 resulting in hundreads of deaths. The story shows the love between two young people. They are the main ones that we are focusing on, bt their social status is not the real drama there. We focus on their fight for surviving on the sinking ship.

This is an example of external conflict as characters face the obsticles caused by the situation they ended up in.

3. The perks of being a wallflower (2012)

The story is based on a book with the same title. It follows te stroy of a young boy who needs to face the period of puberty, becoming a older teen, troubles with siblings and friends as well as his mental state and grief after his untie's death.

It is an example of both external and internal conflict as Charlie both faces the obsticles caused by the enviroment he is in and himself - his mental state, trying to nderstand himself, growing up and delaing with grief.

Propp's Characters

Semiotics - the study of signs. In media it is the interpretation of these signs which creates meaning.

Stuart Hall's Encoding/Decoding model (Reception Theory)

McQuail and Blumler
  • diversion - escape from everyday problems and routine, entertaiment
  • personal relationships - using the media for emotionsl and other interaction, eg substituting soap operas for family life, "water cooler" moment
  • personal identity - finding yourself reflected in texts, learning behaviour and values from texts
  • surveillance - information which could be usefull for living eg weather reports, financial news and holiday bargains
  • the audience is active, meaning that they actively seek out specyfic media and content to achive certain results or gratifications that satisfy their personal needs. The mass also competes with other sources of grafication

The hero journey
